Brown Rice Jar Preparations
Date: 14 October and 15 October
Goal
The goal of the experiment is to decrease the likelihood of contaminations during the brown rice jar preparation. I am the Broke Boi Tek. You can follow along on YouTube.
Materials Required
- Glass jars with lids (Size doesn’t matter)
- Brown Rice
- Pot
- Pressure cooker (Steam bath can work too)
- Aluminum foil
- Rubber bands
- Micropore tape
- Knife or screwdriver
- Dinner plates
- Paper towels
- Water
Method
Brown Rice Preparation
- Put a pot on the stove
- Fill the pot with brown rice (I usually eye-bawl it)
- Add boiling water
- Cook the rice until it is 50% cooked. (I taste test because time varies. The outside should be somewhat soft while the inside should be hard but it doesn’t be hard to bite through. If the rice splits open then it is too cooked)
- Drain water from rice (don’t let it sit in the water for too long as it will hydrate the grain too much)
- Place 1 or 2 paper towels on dinner plates
- Add rice to the paper towels
- Spread out the rice
- Let the rice dry. (wait until the water towels are dry)
Jar preparation
- Clean glass Jars
- Use a knife to stab a hole in the lid
- Cover the hole with micropore tape
- Fill the jars with rice until ¾ full
- Close the jars (The jars shouldn’t be completely closed)
- Cover the lid of the jar with aluminum foil
- Use a rubber band to secure the tin foil
Sterilizing the jars
- Place two paper towels on the bottom of the pressure cooker
- Place the jars in the pressure cooker
- Add boiling water to the pressure cooker. (I fill mine up 2/3 of the way)
- Put on the lid
- Put stove plate on high heat
- Wait for the pressure to build up
- Pressure cook for 90 mins
Observations and Results
Observations
The rice came out really well. There was no mushy parts and almost none of the rice split which i attribute to leaving the rice to dry for a while before putting it in the jars and not over cooking the brown rice.
The jars weren’t wet and I didn’t see any mushiness at the bottom
I should have removed the labels of the jars before sterilizing them because they came off and the jars have sticky parts.
The agar I used to inoculate the brown rice might not have been 100% clean as it was the first transfer. You can see how I did that over here.
Results
All four jars were contaminated during inoculation
